BAG en Peru (ViaThe Cleanest Line)

From The Cleanest Line.

As the speeding and swaying double-decker bus hurtled head-on toward us in our lane, forcing us onto the shoulder of the Pan American Norte highway, I began to rethink our decision to rent a car in Lima and make the two-day drive up the coast to Chicama and Pacasmayo, two of Peru’s most famous and longest pointbreaks...

...Why didn’t we just book one of those San Diego Dentist Surfari Specials that have become so popular where everything is taken care of – food, flight, transportation, lodging, surf guide, masseuse – maximizing your vacation luxury and minimizing your interaction with all local people except the gated resort’s English speaking staff?

180 Degrees South -Trailer

I can't even put into words how much I'm looking forward to this film. Judging from the trailer, and previous Woodshed Films productions, this is going to be a huge hit with me and everyone that experiences it. Shelter was and is my favorite surf movie, and 180 South really seems to capture the spirit that makes me tick. I may not have had these levels of adventures, but its something I aspire to experience and to help my son experience as well. I'll be sure to put up a full review after I'm able to see the entire film.

Bedtime Stories for Wanderers

If stories are the currency of travel, then writer Ryan Nickum is a very wealthy man. By the time he turned 30, Nickum's passport was chock full of the brightly colored patchwork of entry and exit stamps from dozens of distant countries. He was consumed by a desire to travel and haunted by the inability to sit still. The gaps in his resume developed into oceans between jobs. Cynicism grew. The overwhelming urge to quit the job and pack a bag sprang up every six months like a song that would not leave his ears. With his career stalling and idealism flat lining, Nickum looked into his past to search for the seed of the travel affliction. There was only one person to blame -- his father....

Solvang CA

This last week we went to Solvang, a small Danish touristy town north of Santa Barbara. Lots of canon fodder for photographers, and a fun place to spend a couple days. The surrounding hills were beautiful, but alas it was to wet to get out in the woods. Feeding the Ostriches more than made of for that though.

On Surfari - Mauritius

Shayne and Shannon travel to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean to not only surf whats rumored to be the best point wave on the planet, but also to follow in the footsteps of Shayne's parents who traveled/lived there for a time while Shayne was a toddler.

Non-Dirtbag Travel Destinations

Taken from National Geographic Adventure Blog

Text by Global Travel Editor Costas Christ

When NBC's TODAY Show Travel Editor Peter Greenberg asked me to contribute a list of the top 10 places people should avoid when they travel, to include in his new book, Don't Go There! (www.PeterGreenberg.com), I was a little reluctant at first. I am a firm believer that travel, no matter the destination, can be a powerful learning experience. In fact, some of my worst trips have been among the most interesting. They are the places I still tell stories about. But when looked through the lens of sustainable tourism principles—being environmentally friendly, helping to protect cultural and natural heritage, supporting the well-being of local people—there are some places that stand out, and its not for the better. So here is my top 10 must-avoid travel destinations list (or at least consider this warning so that you know what you are getting into before you go).....

Contribute to DDD

As I'm sure you can see I'm not exactly posting on a daily basis. I can use all the dads out there's help in this project, as I can only experience so much with a newborn. Any dads who have the same goals for raising their children, or if you just had a great experience with your son or daughter fitting the purpose of this site, please share.

These submissions include but are not limited to...

Personal stories/experiences
Found articles or editorials worth sharing
Photos and Videos
Tricks and Tips on either being a dad or outdoors
Equipment reviews and testimonials

Outdoors to Dirtbag Dad Diaries means....

Surfing
Snowboarding
Skiing
Climbing
Hiking
Kayaking
Paddling
Trail Running
Biking
Exploration/Travel

If you have a story but question if its fitting the theme of this site, please shoot me an email.

Why do you limit the outdoors activities covered on DDD?

I limit the interpretation on "outdoors" and "exploration" based on the human experience provided by activities. All the activities I have listed are "human-powered" ie: no motorized equipment, and all are non-team sports. I'm not trying to discriminate against football or basketball etc, I love those sports. The purpose of DDD is fathers to actively raise their children with an understanding of the world around us that can't be experience with organized sporting activities held in specific venues.

Any contributions or questions can be sent to dnnymynr@aol.com

Surfwise

Surfwise is a documentary about the Paskowitz family who, led (or forced) by "Doc" Paskowitz, they left the material world behind, and lived out of a 24' camper, traveling all over North and Central America surfing and living the healthy bohemian lifestyle. All eleven of them! A great story and a can't miss for any father. Not just the romanticized aspects, but the hard parts as well. It asks and answers a lot of questions we as fathers will have as we wonder if we're making the right choices for our family. Is this whats best for them, or is it just what we want to be doing? I like the quote at the end...

"Wisdom is what you get from experience, and that it what my children had a lot of."
